What You Need to Know About Waterjet Cutting

Waterjet cutting is a material-removing process that involves cutting materials without thermal stress. It is a common option to conventional cutting techniques that uses high-speed, high pressure water energy to form cuts in a billet.

There are two primary forms of waterjet cutting, which are:

  1. Pure Waterjet Cutting: This is the use of pure water (without any added agents) to cut materials.

  2. Abrasives Waterjet Cutting: This involves mixing a hard powdery substance into the water (or other abrasives agents like corundum or garnet/fine sand) before the cutting process. It is used for complex substances like metal, steel, aluminum and other materials.

The Benefits of Using Waterjet Cutting

Waterjet cutting is one of the more efficient and widely used cutting processes due to its versatility and ease of operation. It is applied in many industries, including mining industries, in the aerospace sector for cutting and shaping, transportation, agriculture, the oil & gas sector, etc.

Other benefits include:

  • No Heat Production: With waterjet cutting, there is no production of heat, as it is a non-contact form of cutting. As a result, there is no heat load on the material (heat can create possible hazards in the workshop). Waterjet cutting also does not create deformities in the material due to the lack of heat involved in the process.

  • Recyclability and Environmentally Friendly: Since waterjet cutting primarily uses water to make cuts, the cutting process is in effect, a recyclable process. The water solution can be reused and doesn’t pollute the environment during the process, which makes it an environmentally friendly process.

  • Quality Edge Cutting: Many designers go for waterjet cutting because it produces smooth, uniform and precise edges. With water jet cutting, there is no need for secondary edge finishing, which can help save time and extra costs. The narrow nozzle in waterjet cutting makes it possible to get perfect, accurate and efficient edge cutting and internal precision for the material.

  • Flexible and Precise Cutting: Waterjet cutting can be used on many different materials. It also allows for cutting material of various thickness without having to switch between different cutting tools to achieve maximum results.
