What is Involved with CNC Machining?

A Computerized Numerical Control Machine (aka CNC machine) is an automated device that uses programming to control various machining tools to cut and create a part. Without any direct manual control, a CNC machine processes a material piece based on precise design parameters to ensure the most exact cuts are made.

CNC machines can work with various types of materials. Because each material has its own set of qualities and machinability, we can adjust machining variables such as RPM, coolant flow, tool selection, feed rate, and other variables to meet your unique and specific product needs.

Standard Costs Involved with CNC Machined Parts and Services

With every CNC quote we provide, there are various aspects we need to consider:

  • Production Time: Production time is one factor that influences your online CNC quote. The time it takes to produce a part with our CNC machines is a factor we take into consideration when creating any CNC quote.

  • Number of Machines Involved: Some CNC quotes we provide involve leveraging multiple machines to complete a job, further contributing to the end price. The more machines involved, the more complex your quote may be. See list of CNC machines we use below.

  • Shipping: Shipping speeds can have an effect on the pricing and costs involved with your end CNC quote.

Factors That Can Affect Machining Quotes and Costs

Our CNC services involve a multitude of specialized machines, processes, procedures and practices that are all considered when you request a CNC quote online. In general, here are some of the primary elements considered when pricing out a CNC quote.

Materials and Processes Used

The materials and techniques utilized have a direct influence in determining the end cost of your CNC project. CNC machining quotes can go up and down based on the type of material as well as the specific CNC machining services necessary to complete your job. See list of available CNC materials and processes below.

Finishes Involved

Depending on the project, you can choose from a variety of finishing options that can reinforce components, enhance visual appeal, cut project duration, and provide other benefits. The type and variety of finishes your project needs can affect the CNC quote we provide. So, think through what end finishes are absolutely necessary vs. which may just be nice to have. This can affect the pricing and costs involved in your quote.

Number of Machines Involved

Nowadays, CNC machines and equipment can handle various tasks. However, some complex jobs require specific machines that can handle additional tasks such as welding, hole-punching, and laser cutting (or more specialized cutting). Our CNC quotes will consider how much machining and number and types of machines necessary to complete your job.

Turning vs. Milling

Turning and milling are two popular machining operations that use a cutting tool to remove material from a workpiece. They use diverse approaches to reach this purpose, despite their similarities. The utilization of rotation differs significantly between these two machining processes, which can affect the price in a CNC quote.

CNC Quotes and Typical CNC Processes Available

Choosing the best process for part fabrication ensures the highest quality component gets produced. However, quality does come with a price and can affect CNC quotes and final pricing. Here are the standard CNC processes considered when quoting out a CNC project:

Milling

Milling is a machining method in which a machine uses a rotating cutting tool to eliminate material from a stationary workpiece. This machining process works on the same concept as turning which is a cutting tool that pushes against a workpiece, taking material from it.

Turning

Turning is a machining operation in which a machine, usually a lathe, uses a cutting tool to remove material from a revolving workpiece. Specifically, the workpiece moves while the cutting tool stands stationary when turning.

Routing

CNC routing is similar to CNC milling. CNC routers come with the ability to use computer numerical control to route tool paths that enable the machine to function. CNC routers can be used to reduce waste and increase productivity, producing some items in a much shorter amount of time than using other machines.

Surface Grinding

In CNC Surface Grinding, a high-speed abrasive wheel gets used to eliminate minute amounts of unnecessary material.

Lapping & Polishing

Lapping and Polishing are methods of rubbing two surfaces together with an abrasive material between them, either manually or by machine.

Welding / Post-Weld Machining

A procedure known as Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) is regularly used to guarantee that the material strength of the product does not become compromised after welding. Specifically, welders utilize PWHT to eliminate residual stresses to battle hardness or improve material strength.

Heli-Coils / Hardware Inserts

A Helicoil is a metal insert that is coiled and fits inside tapped holes. Manufacturers can feed a screw into or out of the insert once a helicoil prong has broken off. Moreover, thanks to heli-coils, screws may be inserted and removed without damaging the part’s native threads.
